Fair Time Camping

Registered Camping

Registered campers are those who have a permanent spot every year during the Iowa State Fair. Registered campers have mailed in a form to be placed on our waitlist each year and after many years of patiently waiting, they have been granted a permanent camping spot during the Fair.

Registered Camping Information

Non-Registered Camping

Non-registered campers are those that want a permanent spot, but have not received one yet. These campers will need to mail in a form every year to gain seniority. Camping at the Fair is a popular tradition for many families and some have been on the waiting list for 20 years, so please be patient!

Common Camping Questions

What is the difference between a non-registered camper and registered camper?

Non-registered campers do not have a permanent reservable site. Non-registered campers are served on a first-come, first-served basis and likely do not camp with utilities.

Registered campers are the only campers who have reservable sites. These campers might have camped in the same location for many years.

How do I become a registered camper?

To become a registered camper, you must fill out the non-registered camping form on our website each year until you are awarded a site. Once you are awarded a site you will be able to get that same site the following year. The non-registered camping form will be posted January 1. Please send in your information EVERY YEAR between January 1 and May 1 to be considered.

Can I camp at the Fair this year if I have never camped at the Iowa State Fair?

These campers are served on a first-come, first-served basis starting on the Sunday before the Fair starts. These campers will likely go to an overflow camping area where they can run a generator. No utilities are available in these areas.

How do I participate in the "Land Rush?"

The campgrounds "land rush" is always the Sunday before the Fair starts. Campers are let into the grounds through gate 2 at the intersection of 33rd and University for staging at 6 a.m. At 8 a.m., 10 campers at a time are let into the campground to find a site.

I want to come on the Sunday before the Fair, but I do not want to participate in the "Land Rush." What do I need to do?

If you do not want to participate in the "land rush" you can wait until 12 p.m. and go to the main entrance to the campground to be processed and find a site if available.

Iowa State Fair Scooter Policy

Three or four wheeled, manual or electrically driven (at a walking pace) OPDMDs are permitted to be used in all areas open to pedestrian use so long as these devices are 1) designed by the manufacturer for single rider use only; 2) occupied by only one rider while in operation; and 3) not pulling or towing any trailer-like object. Scooters are available for rental, during the fair, at Gates 8, 10, 11, 13, and 15.

Fair time camping is a great way to enjoy the fun and festivities of Iowa’s biggest celebration! Every August, thousands of Fairgoers from all over the Midwest park their campers and pitch their tents during the Fair. Whether it’s a vacation or a family reunion, stop and see why Nothing Compares to the Iowa State Fair. Accommodations for tents can always be made if campers are not particular on placement. Tent campers follow the same procedures as other campers.
