Ed Lamson - Webster City
Ed Lamson was born on September 4, 1917, in Des Moines, Iowa. His involvement with horses began in 1931, working summers for his grandfather Ed Crawford and great-uncle Fred Crawford at Crawford Stables on the Iowa State Fairgrounds.
After graduating from Portage, Michigan High School in 1934, he moved to Des Moines to work full-time at the family stables. In 1936, they expanded to include Saddle Horses and opened a Riding Academy and training stable. Ed studied equitation and Saddle Horse training extensively and from 1937 to 1941, taught accredited equitation courses for Drake University students.
In 1940, Ed purchased Crawford Stables, began showing horses, and participated in 100-mile competitive trail rides. He helped found the Trou-A-Way Club, which hosted shows and rides, and was active in the Iowa Horse and Mule Breeders Association.
His judging and showing career took him across the Midwest—from Chicago to Denver and Kansas City to Minneapolis. He trained and showed a wide range of breeds, including Stock Horses, Arabians, Palominos, Tennessee Walkers, Parade Horses, and fine harness horses.
Ed sold the stables in 1950. Now retired in Webster City, Iowa, he enjoys life with his wife Jan, two children, four stepchildren, and eight grandchildren.
