Iowa State Fair Chili Cook-Off Crown Claimed

The top “Red Texas Style” chili cooks squared off in heated competition in the Chili Cook Off contest, judged Saturday August 19 at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Kevin Stovall of Lees Summit, Mo., claimed first place, $250 cash prize, and is eligible for the World’s Chili Cook-off Championship.
Kyle Barton of West Des Moines earned second place and $150. Christopher Walker of Overland Park, Kan., claimed third place and $75.
Fourth place was awarded to Bryan Alcorn of Roanoke, VA and fifth place was awarded to Michael Harris of Maple Grove, Minn.
Entrants were required to be a member of the International Chili Society and were asked to prepare at least two quarts of “Red Texas Style” Chili on site during the Fair. “Red Texas Style” chili uses no beans or pasta. The chili can contain any combination of meats, cooked with chili peppers and spices.
Each entry was judged on texture of the meat, chili flavor, consistency/blend of spices, aroma and color.
