Young Bakers Win State Fair Youth Cake Decorating Awards

Claire Tigges of Waukee won First Place overall and a $50 cash award in the Youth Decorated Cakes competition judged Monday, August 7, prior to the start of the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Emmaline Walz of Marion claimed Second Place Overall and $25. Kloe Nissen of Waterloo earned Third Place Overall and $15.

Entries were judged on appearance, neatness, difficulty, originality and design and use of edible applications.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
