Nuts were the featured ingredient in the Our Iowa Church Cookbook Favorites contest, judged Saturday, August 14, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Contestants were challenged to create an award winning recipe from an Iowa church cookbook that featured nuts.
Nicki Studer of Indianola won first place and $400 for the kitchen fund of the Iowa church from which the recipe was taken.
Phyllis Olson of Newton earned second place and $200. Jacqueline Riekena claimed third place and $100.
Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Sharon Lesan of Ankeny and Rita Cashman Becker of Ft. Madison.
Entries were judged on taste, appearance, creativity and recipe origin.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
