Ice Cream Toppings Win State Fair Awards

Original ice cream toppings were the focus of competition in the My Favorite Ice Cream Topping contest judged Thursday, August 15, at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.

Sheryl Geerts of Johnston won first place and a $100 cash award in the Sauces and Syrups class. Jeffrey King of Newton claimed second place and $50. Rachel Petersen of Knoxville earned third place and $25.

In the Other Toppings class, Ian Caffrey of Ankeny won top honors and $100. Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines earned second place and $50, and Sheryl Geerts of Johnston took home third place and $25.

Entries were judged on originality, taste and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 140 divisions, 726 classes and over 6,400 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
