West Des Moines Cook Named State Fair Chili Cook Off Winner

Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won first place and a $150 cash award in the Mrs. Grimes Chili Cook Off judged Tuesday, August 15, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Tyler Ingle of Altoona claimed second place and $75. Gary Turner of Des Moines earned third place and $50.

Contestants were required to use at least two cans of Mrs. Grimes beans in their chili creations.

Entries were judged on taste, appearance and recipe originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
