Meringue Pies Win State Fair Honors

Jackie Garnett of Des Moines won first place and $125 in the Lemon Meringue Pie competition judged Sunday, August 20, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines won second place and $75. Andrew Picchietti of Iowa City received third place and $25.

Entries were judged on flavor, texture and appearance

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging was held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
