Coffee Creativity Earns State Fair Honors

Rachel Petersen of Knoxville won first place and a $75 gift certificate in the Culinary Coffee Creations competition, judged Friday, August 11, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Tammy Dial of Urbandale claimed second place and a $50 gift certificate. Jenna Brady of Runnells earned third place and a $25 gift certificate.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Sara Carlson of Des Moines.

Contestants were challenged to use coffee as featured ingredient in any food item that is not a cake or beverage.

Entries were judged on taste, best use of coffee and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
