Youth Cooks Claim State Fair Awards

Aspiring cooks between the ages of 12 and 17 squared off in more than 20 classes in the Casey’s Intermediate Favorite Creations contest judged Thursday, August 17, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Brooklynn Sedlock of Indianola won First and Second Place Overall, as well as the Sweepstakes award.

Lauryn Paulson of West Des Moines claimed Third Place Overall.

Lily Zabel of Ankeny received the Reserve Sweepstakes award.

Entries were judged on taste, texture, appearance and creativity.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There were 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging was held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
