Pizza Pie Honors Handed Out at the State Fair

Cheryl Rogers of Ankeny won first place and a $200 cash award in the Gino’s Pizza Contest, judged Friday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Matthew Phoenix of Ankeny earned second place and $100. Holly Houg of Urbandale claimed third place and $75.
Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Marianne Carlson of Jefferson.
Contestants were challenged to create an award winning pizza that featured a homemade sauce.
Entries were judged on taste, ingredients and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
