Best Bologna Creation Wins State Fair Crown

Susie Jones of Winterset won first place and a $100 cash award in the Ulrich Pella Bologna Soup or Chowder competition judged Tuesday, August 15, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Dawn Shaw of Pella earned second place and $50. Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines claimed third place and $25.

Contestants were tasked to create an award-worthy soup or chowder using Ulrich Pella Bologna as an ingredient.

Entries were judged on taste, creativity and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
