Blue Cheese Shines in State Fair Recipe Competition

Dawn Osmonson Sturm of Waukee won first place and a $500 cash award in the Maytag Dairy Farms Blue Cheese Recipe competition judged Saturday, August 12, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Susie Jones of Winterset earned second place and $250. Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines claimed third place and $100.

Contestants were challenged to create an award-winning recipe that featured Maytag Blue Cheese as the primary flavor.

Entries were judged on flavor pairing, creativity and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
