Food - Fleet Farm Classic Jellies

Joy Russell of Des Moines won first place overall in the Fleet Farm Classic Jellies competition judged Wednesday, August 10, prior to the start of the 2022 Iowa State Fair.

Rod Zeitler of Iowa City claimed second place overall and the sweepstakes award.

Michelle Westphal of Waterloo captured third place overall and Tanya Hardy of Osceola earned the reserve sweepstakes award.

Jellies are a semi-solid mixture generally made with fruit juice and sugar. Flavored liquids other than fruit juice may also be used. Jelly is translucent and tender enough to cut easily with a spoon, yet firm enough to hold its shape when turned from a jar.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 128 divisions, 615 classes and nearly 6,300 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air Adventure Park.
