Urbandale Cook Wins State Fair Apple Cooking Crown

Jenn Goellner of Urbandale won first place and a $60 cash award in the Apple-Solutely Delicious Apple Dessert competition judged Monday, August 14, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Matthew Phoenix of Ankeny earned second place and $30. Tammy Dial of Urbandale claimed third place and $10.

Contestants were tasked to create an award-worthy dessert using fresh apples.

Entries were judged on flavor, creativity and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
