Church Cookbook Classics Win Iowa State Fair Ribbons

Marjorie Rodgers of Indianola won first place in the Our Iowa Church Cookbook Favorites competition, judged Saturday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Matthew Phoenix of Ankeny claimed second place and Louise Piper of Garner earned third place.
Julie Petersen of Knoxville and Andrea Spencer of Stanton both earned Honorable Mention honors.
Participants prepared a recipe from an Iowa church cookbook that featured apples. Each entry was accompanied by a written description of the origins of the recipe.
Entries were judged on taste, appearance, creativity and description of the recipe’s origin.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
