Canned Meat Creations Take Top Iowa State Fair SPAM Awards

Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines earned first place in the Adult division of The Great American SPAM Championship competition, judged Sunday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Susie Jones of Waukee earned second place and Eileen Gannon of Des Moines claimed third.
Graham Hutchison of Des Moines took first place In the Kid Chef division. Kira Conlan of Pleasant Hill placed second, and third place was awarded to Sydney Jones of Polk City.
The theme for this year’s competition was “Sweet and Savory”. Entries were judged on taste, theme, ease of preparation and presentation.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
