Art abounds at the Iowa State Fair. From the art show in the Cultural Center that celebrates the artistic endeavors of Iowans to wood chain carved sculptures throughout the Fairgrounds to colorful quilts in the Fabric and Threads Department, nothing compares to the Iowa State Fair.
Patty & Jim Cownie Cultural Center
Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Step inside the Cultural Center and view the state’s largest art show. Enjoy some of the finest photography from Iowa’s most talented artists. The Cultural Center is also home to art demonstrations, intricate woodcarvings and detailed doll houses.
Fabric and Threads Department
Varied Industries Building second floor (additional quilts on display downstairs at east end of south hallway)
Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Home to displays featuring counted cross stitch, counted thread techniques, crocheting, embroidery, hand and machine knitting, quilting, hooked rugs, tatting, toys and dolls, needlepoint, weaving, clothing, and sewing for the home. See the daily program for daily demonstrations and working exhibits. “Make It and Take It” sessions are held each day except August 19 (1-2 hours long, $10 materials fee). Or volunteer at the State Fair Sew-In to help sew quilts for charity (Noon to 5 p.m. daily, no experience needed).
Bruce L. Rastetter 4-H Exhibits Building
Open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Explore nearly 4,000 exhibits from some of the most talented and creative 4-H members in the state. This building offers great photography, quilts, customized classic cars, homemade furniture and numerous talent shows.
