The Strawberry Fest wine produced by Eagles Landing Winery of Marquette won the Double Gold award in the Iowa Wine Commercial Competition judged Saturday, July 28, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
To achieve double gold status, wines must receive Gold awards from both judging panels.
Eagles Landing Winery’s Strawberry Fest wine was the only entrant to receive a Double Gold award.
Two panels of judges conducted blind tastings of 110 wines entered by 22 Iowa wineries. All entrants were made from Iowa grown grapes.
The competition uses an awards system based on how the wine should be shared. A Gold award means the wine would be one you would be “proud to take to a dinner party.” A Silver award denotes a wine that you would be “proud to serve to friends in my home,” while a Bronze award signifies a wine that a person “will enjoy drinking at home.”
Every day of the Fair, from 5 to 8 p.m., samples of Double Gold and Gold winning wines will be available for $1 in Grandfather’s Barn. Samples of State Fair White and State Fair Red wines will also be available for $1 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
