Young Cooks Create Iowa State Fair Award-Winning Appetizers

Samantha Hilbert of Urbandale won first place and a $25 gift card in the Sleepy Hollow Appetizer Contest judged Wednesday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Clarissa Ridgway of Johnston earned second place and a $20 gift card. Gage Brinker of West Des Moines claimed third place and a $15 gift card.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to Ariela Phillips of Indianola, Cameryn Clifton of Ankeny and Megan Vandervoorde of Altoona.
The contest was open to youth between the ages of 10 and 17.Entries were judged on flavor and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
