Young Cooks Combine Fiction and Foods To Win Fair Awards

Amelia McLean of Waukee won first place in the Favorite Book Desserts competition judged Friday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.
Tori Schmalzried of Pleasant Hill earned second place and Clarissa Ridgway of Johnston claimed third place.
Judges awarded Grant Spencer of Stanton Honorable Mention.
Contestants between the ages of 7 and 17 were challenged to create a dessert based on a favorite book.
Entries were judged on design, taste and creativity.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
