Rookie Iowa State Fair Cook Wins Honors in Special First Timer’s Contest

First time Iowa State Fair Food Department entrants battled for top honors on the Beginner’s Contest, judged Sunday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Alex Larson of Ankeny won First Place Overall and a $50 cash award. Meredith Willey of Norwalk earned Second Place Overall and a $25 and Marcie Coleman of Des Moines claimed Third Place Overall and $10.
Entries were judged on taste, appearance and originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
