Made from Scratch Pecan Pies Claim Big State Fair Awards

Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines won first place and a $250 cash award in the Vera Towne’s Fresh Pecan Pie competition, judged Saturday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Louise Piper of Garner claimed second place and $125. Deanna Smith of Des Moines earned third place and $75.
Marianne Carlson of Jefferson won fourth place and $50. Tanya K. Hardy of Osceola claimed fifth place and $50 and Susie Jones of Waukee earned sixth place and $50.
The made from scratch entries were judged on taste and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
