Kephart Continues His Winning Streak in Men’s Baking Competition

Michael Kephart of Carlisle won first place and a $100 cash award in the men’s division of the Deloris Jacobson Memorial Men’s Cookie Baking competition judged Friday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Larry Stohr of Altoona earned second place and a $50 cash reward. Trent Gilbert of West Des Moines claimed third place and a $25 cash reward.
In the boy’s division, ages 5-10, Drew Gilbert of West Des Moines won first place and a $25 cash reward. Noah Ford of Ankeny earned second place, and Nolan Knupp of Granger won third.
All contestants were asked to present six drop style cookies to judges who critiqued on taste, texture, general appearance and creativity.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
