The culinary and artistic worlds joined forces in the Beaverdale Confections Chocolate and Candy Sculptures competition, judged Tuesday, at the 2019 Iowa State Fair.
Brenda Becker of Pella won first place and a total of $100 in cash awards and gift cards in the Adult Chocolate Sculpture class.
Julie Petersen of Knoxville earned second place and $50 in cash and gift cards.
Entries were judged on artistic flare, theme and ingredient combination.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 166 divisions, 715 classes and over 7,300 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
