The top fudge creators from across the state squared off in friendly competition in the Iowa’s Best Fudge contest, judged Tuesday, at the 2019 Iowa State Fair.
In the Chocolate Fudge class of competition, Rita Cashman Becker of Ft. Madison won first place and a total of $100 in cash awards and gift cards.
Marianne Carlson of Jefferson claimed second place and $50 in cash and gift cards. Susie Jones of Waukee earned third place and $40 in gift cards and cash.
Belinda Myers of Osceola won first place and $100 in cash awards and gift cards in the non-Chocolate Fudge class of competition.
Diana Barker of Indianola earned second place and $50 in cash and gift cards. Rita Cashman Becker of Fr. Madison took third place and a total of $40 in cash and gift cards.
Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 166 divisions, 715 classes and over 7,300 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
The Iowa State Fair is one of the oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country and the single largest event in the state. The Fair began over 160 years ago and is now considered one of the best events in the nation, attracting more than one million Fairgoers every year from all over the world.
