Youth cooks between the ages of 10 and 17 were challenged to create an award winning appetizer in the Sleepy Hollow Appetizer Contest, judged Thursday, August 19, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Ava Praska of West Des Moines won first place and a $40 gift card.
Emerson Hilbert of Urbandale claimed second place and a $30 gift card. Brooklynn Sedlock of Indianola earned third place and a $25 gift card.
Judges also awarded Honorable Mention of Caroline Reeder of Des Moines.
Entries were judged on flavor, creativity and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
