Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won first place and a $500 cash award in the Mother Podolack’s Chili Contest, judged Thursday, August 12, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Amy Fuson of Indianola earned second place and $150. Susie Jones of Winterset claimed third place and $75.
Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Carrie Henderson of West Des Moines.
Contestants were challenged to create a chili as good as the one made by the mother of former University of Iowa and Kansas City Chief football player Ed Podolak.
Entries were judges on taste, appearance and creativity.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
