Salsa creators squared off in sweet and spicy competition in the Kramer’s Best Salsa contest, judged Friday, August 13, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won first place and a $100 cash award in the Best Homemade Salsa class. Deanna Bahr of Indianola took second place and $75. Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines claimed third place and $50.
Ann Gillotti of Ankeny won first place and $100 the Best Fruit Salsa class. Kyle Barton of West Des Moines earned second place and $75. Martha Kunkle of Carlisle claimed third place and $50.
Entries were judges on taste, originality, appearance and aroma.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
