Food: Iowa's Big Four

Iowa’s top agricultural commodities; corn, soybeans, pork and eggs were the key ingredients in the Iowa’s Big Four competition, judged Wednesday, August 18, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.

Brooklynn Sedlock of Indianola won first place and a $75 gift card in the Savory class of competition. Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines earned second place and a $50 gift card. Larry Mahlstedt of Des Moines claimed third place and a $25 gift card.

In the Sweet class, Alisa Woods of Des Moines took first place and a $75 gift card. Olivia Smith of Winterset earned second place and a $50 gift card. Rita Cashman Becker of Ft. Madison claimed third place and a $25 gift card.

Contestants were challenged to create a dish that using at least two of the four key ingredients.

Entries were judged on taste, creativity and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
