The top marmalade makers put their best creations to the test in the Fleet Farm Marmalade Contest, judged Wednesday, prior to the start of the 2021 Iowa State Fair.

Rod Zeitler of Iowa City won First and Third Places Overall and the Sweepstakes award.

Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines won Second Place Overall and the Reserve Sweepstakes award.

Marmalades are soft fruit jellies containing small pieces of fruit or peel evenly suspended in translucent jelly. Marmalade often contains citrus fruit.

Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
