The best savory and sweet snack mixes were the focus of competition in the AllSpice Snack Mix contest, judged Monday, August 16, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won first place and a $50 cash award in the Savory Snack Mix class. Larry Mahlstedt of Des Moines earned second place and Sara Carlson of Des Moines claimed third place.
Bridget Lottman of Norwalk won first place and $50 in the Sweet Snack Mix class. Ann Gillotti of Ankeny claimed second place and Rita Cashman-Becker of Ft. Madison eared third place.
Entries were judged on creativity, taste and addictiveness.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
