Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won first place and a $75 cash award in the AllSpice Chili Contest, judged Friday, August 13, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.
Ellen Reeder of Des Moines claimed second place and a $50 gift certificate. Pamela Reynolds of Norwalk earned third place and a $25 gift certificate.
In the Vegetarian Chili Class, Rebecca Howe of West Des Moines won first place and $75. Sara Carlson of Des Moines earned second place and a $50 gift certificate. Bridget Lottman of Norwalk claimed third place and a $25 gift certificate.
Entries were judged on creativity, taste and heat/flavor balance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
