Des Moines Duo Prove Fair Winning Baking is All Relative
August 15, 2017
The team of Lori Richman and Grant Wilson won first place and a $100 cash award in the Creating a Family Legacy competition, judged Sunday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
The duo of Valerie Bandstra and Peter Bandstra of Oskaloosa claimed second place and Eileen Gannon and Helen Hutchison of Des Moines earned third place.
Each entry was prepared by a two-member team that consisted of either a grandparent and grandchild or a parent and child. Each team was required to bring a pre-baked item for judging as well as prepare a recipe in front of the judges up to the point at which would be ready to go into the oven. Only desserts baked in an oven qualified, and each team had 30 minutes to prepare their recipe.
Judging was based on teamwork, neatness of entrants and preparation area, completion of dessert preparation in 30 minutes and overall quality based on taste, texture and presentation.
