SEVEN NEW RECORDS SET IN SALE OF CHAMPIONS AT IOWA STATE FAIR; ALL-TIME HIGH OF $247,500 REACHED IN AUCTION OF 14 CHAMPIONS

When final auctioneer cry of “All in, All said, All done? SOLD!” echoed through the Penningroth Media Center in the Cattle Barn at Iowa State Fair and auction receipts were tallied, the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) raised a record-setting $247,500 for the 14 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA Grand Champions in the Sale of Champions Saturday, August 18, at the 2007 Fair.

On the way to reaching the all-time total sale proceeds record, seven champion records, as well as the all-time high sale price for any species, were broken.  The Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer and the Grand Champion FFA Market Hog each sold for $40,000.  This broke the old record all-time species record by $2,000.  Other new price records included:  the Reserve Champion 4-H Market Steer, $29,000; the Reserve Champion 4-H Market Heifer, $15,500; the Reserve Champion FFA Market Hog, $15,000; the Grand Champion 4-H Market Lamb, $13,000; and the Reserve Champion 4-H Broiler Pen, $6,000.

Participants in the Sale of Champions were asked to find hometown supporters to set a floor price for bidding.  The purchaser in the auction paid the difference between the floor price and the final sale price.  Each participant in the Sale takes home a check for 80 percent of the animal’s sale price.  The IFAA keeps 20 percent to fund the scholarship program and cover Sale expenses.  In addition to their sale earnings, the exhibitors of the Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer, Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog and Grand Champion FFA Market Lamb earn the use of a new aluminum livestock trailer for one year courtesy of Featherlite, Inc., of Cresco.

When added with the $113,900 of scholarships and performance and carcass awards presented prior to the Sale, the IFAA bestowed $361,400 on young livestock and poultry exhibitors during the day’s event.  Since the inception of the Sale of Champions in 1988, the IFAA has given out more than $3.3 million through sale proceeds and scholarships to deserving youth participants in agricultural-related projects and interested in agricultural-related careers.
