New Ice Cream Flavor Creations Win State Fair Honors

Geraldine Tait of Humeston won first place and a $100 cash award in the Ice Cream Flavor Creation competition, judged Thursday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Mercedes Bern-Klug of Iowa City claimed second place and $75. Olivia Smith of Winterset earned third place and $50.
Contestants were challenged to create a flavored ice cream using ½ gallon of vanilla ice cream as the foundation of the new flavor.
Entries were judged on originality and flavor.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
