Iowa State Fair Gets Greener in 2010

As crowds enjoy one of the oldest and best State Fairs in the country at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, this year the Fair has an expanded offering that can help teach kids and adults a valuable lesson. New this year, the Iowa State Fair is offering recycling at the Campgrounds. In addition, Fair organizers partnered with Waste Management to place blue-topped recycling receptacles for plastic bottles throughout the Fairgrounds. Cardboard is also recycled throughout the Fairgrounds. Fair officials and Waste Management are even doing recycling education outreach near Gate 10 at the Fair.
“Every year the Iowa State Fair is known for its food, entertainment, competitions and so much more; this year we wanted to expand recycling and do our part for the environment,” said Gary Slater, Iowa State Fair CEO. “We want to grow our recycling every year at the Iowa State Fair. There are so many opportunities to recycle here; we just need patrons to use the bins. Together we can keep tons of waste out of landfills with just a little bit of education and extra effort.”
Waste Management has more than 80 receptacles strategically placed throughout the Fairgrounds where patrons can recycle plastic bottles. Throughout each day of the Fair, Waste Management crews remove the recycled material and transport it to a central point and ultimately a local recycling facility. Waste Management also distributed recycling bags for use at the State Fair’s Campground. Campers can recycle a variety of items like aluminum cans, glass jars and newspapers, then empty the bag at the recycling centers located throughout the campgrounds.
“Recycling numbers are up across the country as individuals, businesses and organizations go green,” said Carrie Spencer, spokesperson for Waste Management of Iowa. “It is encouraging to see the Iowa State Fair put such a large focus on recycling. We believe it will make a huge difference in the community and hope visitors will continue to recycle when they return home.”
