Grand Opening Discounts and Concert Kick-off 2010 Iowa State Fair
Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Des Moines, IA
On opening day, August 12, the Iowa State Fair is honoring America’s armed forces by hosting a patriotic concert, offering discounted admission and dedicating the newest addition to the Fairground facilities. The 2010 Fair offers “Non Stop Fun” August 12-22.
From 6 a.m. to noon Fairgoers can take advantage of half-price admission with a coupon featured in the Iowa State Fair daily program special section of the August 8 issue of The Des Moines Register. One coupon per person ($5 for adults, $2 for children ages 6-11, children 5 and under are free; parking not included). Gate admission is also half-price after 5 p.m. Monday through Thursdays.
Opening ceremonies will feature a special performance by country music star Lee Greenwood. Greenwood’s unique voice, insightful songwriting and enthusiastic patriotism coupled with his first major single, “God Bless the USA,” make him the ideal choice to honor America’s military heroes and their families. Greenwood will return to the Jacobson Exhibition Center stage that evening for a full concert at 7 p.m.
Attendees at opening day festivities may win up to $700 instantly as the Iowa Lottery hands out free $1 scratch tickets supporting the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund (one ticket to ages 21 or older; available only during opening ceremonies).
The opening day celebrations will start in the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center at 9 a.m. with the dedication of the new building. The three-phase construction project began during the 2007 Fair and spanned nearly three years. Now complete, the state-of-the-art facility features an indoor arena, practice arena, meeting rooms and seating for 3,500. The climate-controlled building can accommodate the growing popularity of horse shows during the Fair as well as numerous year-round events.
Fair fun continues all day with non-stop contests, food, games and entertainment including performances by The Nadas, Sioux City Rochestra, Davy Jones, and Jake Owen. Christian music stars MercyMe and the Newsboys will perform on the Grandstand stage at 8 p.m. Tickets for the Grandstand show are $28 (plus convenience charges) and are available now through Ticketmaster and beginning July 12 at the Iowa State Fair Box Office.
