West Des Moines Man Whistles Way to Blue Ribbon in State Fair Contest

Jake Arends, 27, of West Des Moines won first place in the Adult division of the Whistling competition held Thursday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Carl Pettigrew, 56, of Urbandale and Brendon Snell, 35, of Waukee placed second and third, respectively.
In the Youth division, Garrett R. Bowder, 16, of Pender, Neb. claimed the blue ribbon while Keegan Kehrli, 11, of Winthrop took second. Daniel Cannariato, 11, of Fort Worth, Texas, was awarded third.
Each participant was allowed to perform two songs or whistle three minutes.
The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
