Top Bakers Slice Competition in State Fair Bread Contest

Bakers from across the region attempted to rise to the occasion in the Fleischmann’s Yeast Bake for the Cure competition judged Friday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
In the Yeast Bread category, Janine Knop of Atlantic won first place and a $150 cash award. Cristen C. Clark of Runnells earned second place and $75. Connie Schaffer-Sherman of Des Moines took third place and $50.
Clark also won first place and a $100 cash award in the Whole Grain Bread category. Kathleen Olesen of Des Moines took second place and $50. Emma Whitlock of Indianola claimed third place, and Randall Kult of Ankeny was given an honorable mention.
Entries were judged on flavor, texture, appearance and creativity.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the recently-renovated Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
