Team Butteriffic took first place in the Battle of the Butter contest judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair. The team of Integer Group employees, Betty Baker, Debbie Kelly, both of Ankeny, Kimberly Bilstad of Waukee and Jana Erickson of Des Moines, sculpted the award-winning butter statue in just 30 minutes on the Anne and Bill Riley Stage sponsored by Pepsi.
Second place was awarded to a foursome from Norwalk composed of Darcy Hosier, Amy Desenberg, Tammy Apana, and Tonya Apana. Third place went to Better Butter Builders with teammates Eric Shumate and Eldree Baer, both of Des Moines, Jennifer Campbell of Clive and Patrick Baker of Norwalk.
The Battle of the Butter is part of the festivities celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow. Teams of two to four sculptors compete daily for a chance to have their sculpture on display in the John Deere Agriculture Building sponsored by Alliant Energy alongside the 2011 Butter Cow. A $100 prize is awarded to the winning team each day. Judging is based on originality, creativity and use of butter.
