A mere one inch separated the top two finishers in the Tall Corn competition judged Wednesday, August 8, prior to the start of the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Casey Perkins of Topeka, Kan., claimed first place with a stalk measuring in at 17 feet 11 inches tall.
Jean Bickmeier of Harper earned second place with an entry measuring 17 feet 10 inches.
Sam Armstrong of Ames and Gary Bickmeier of Harper shared third place honors with corn stalks measuring in at 15 feet, 10 inches tall.
The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2012 Iowa State Fair, August 9-19. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
