Sweet Taste of Victory in State Fair Sorghum Cooking Contest

The versatility of Iowa-grown sorghum as a sweetener was on display in the Cooking with Sorghum competition judged Tuesday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
In the Bread class, Randall Kult of Ankeny won first place. Kathleen Olesen of Des Moines took second place, and Marjorie Rodgers of Indianola claimed third place.
Judy Thompson of Ankeny won first place in the Desserts class. Jan Trometer of Jamaica took second place, and Lana Ross of Indianola claimed third place.
In the Sorghum Challenge class, Joyce Larson of New Market took first place. Rodgers claimed second place, and Patty Davis of Des Moines earned third place.
Entries were judged on taste, appearance and best use of sorghum.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
