Stringed Instruments Pluck Blue Ribbons at State Fair

Fourteen musicians ages 14 to 75 competed in the Banjo, Guitar and Mandolin contests, judged Saturday and Sunday at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
In the Guitar contest, Dale Wayman of West Des Moines placed first, while second place went to Steve Hurst of Boone. Rick Drewelow of Ionia captured third.
Benjamin McClure of Des Moines earned first place in the Mandolin contest. Hurst placed second, and Joanne Olson of Ames took third.
Darin Masson of Centerville took first place in the Banjo Contest.
The contests were part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
