Rod Zeitler of Iowa City won the top three overall places in the C&H Canned Conserves competition judged Thursday, August 9, during the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Zeitler also won the Sweepstakes prize. Kaye Rupprecht of Beacon and Terri Sinclair of Cumming shared Reserve Sweepstakes honors.
A conserve is similar to jam. Conserves generally contain two or more fruits, one of which is usually a citrus fruit. They contain nuts, raisins or coconut. In its truest form, a conserve contains both nuts and raisins. Conserves are flavored to accompany meat and poultry. They can also be used as spreads on bread products.
Entries were judged on flavor, consistency, appearance and food safety.
