Schleswig Stalk Wins State Fair Tall Corn Title

The 16 foot 11 inch corn stalk of John Cassens of Schleswig bested 31 other entrants to win the Tall Corn contest judged August 10, prior to the start of the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Jean Bickmeier of Harper claimed second place with a stalk measuring 16 feet, 7 ½ inches. Mark and Bailey Browne of Osceola took third place with an entry of 15 feet, 7 inches.
Fourth place was won by John Washburn of Des Moines with a stalk of 15 feet, 2 inches and fifth place was claimed by Sam Armstrong of Ames at an impressive 15 feet.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21. The Fairgrounds are located at East 30th and East University Avenue, just 10 minutes east of downtown Des Moines, and are open 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day of the Fair. Exhibit hours may vary.
