The top pizza makers in the state squared off in the Best Pizza in Iowa competition judged Monday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Kyle Barton of West Des Moines won first place in the Pizza with Red Sauce class. Jackie Garnett of Des Moines took second place, and Matthew Phoenix of Ankeny earned third place.
Rosemary Ridgway ofJohnstontook first place in the Pizza with White Sauce class. Tiffany Melchers of Des Moines claimed second place, and Dawn Troutner of Melbourne eared third place. Judges also awarded an Honorable Mention to Scott Andreas of Ankeny.
Entries were judged on taste, originality and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
