Family memories and recipes secured blue ribbons in the My Grandparents' Favorite Food contest judged Monday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Returning champ Emmy Thomas of Des Moines took first place in the Main Dish and Side Dish class. Second place went to Allison Baumhover of Woodward, and Kyle McGuire of Johnston collected third.
In the Snack and Dessert category, McGuire snagged another ribbon with first place. Keegan Hockett of West Des Moines collected second, while third place was awarded to Jenny Petersen of Knoxville.
The competition, open to entrants age 17 and under, asked competitors to create a dish their grandparents would serve them. Entries were then judged on taste, ease of preparation and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
