Kids’ Soy Creations Honored at Iowa State Fair

Young creative cooks from across the state squared off in the Kids Cooking with Soy competition judged Tuesday, August 9, prior to the start of the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
In the Cookie class, Preston Scott Runyon of New Market won first place. Nick Johnson of West Des Moines earned second place, and Kyle McGuire of Johnston took third place. Judges also gave Jennifer Leeper of Altoona an honorable mention award.
Alex Johnson of West Des Moines won first place in the Appetizer class. Courtney Youngers of Urbandale claimed second place, and Olivia Caron Smith of Winterset earned third place.
Entries were judged on flavor, creativity and appearance.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Due to the large number of classes, Food Department judging begins prior to the Fair in the recently-renovated Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
“Nothing Compares” to the 2011 Iowa State Fair, celebrating 100 years of the Butter Cow August 11-21.
