Jan Trometer of Jamaica earned first place, $75 and a new cookbook in the My Kind of Cooking Quick and Easy Desserts contest judged Wednesday at the 2012 Iowa State Fair.
Second place went to Holly Houg of West Des Moines, while Darrellyn Knight of Des Moines took third. Rebecca Howe of Des Moines earned an Honorable Mention. Houg and Knight each won a cookbook and a cash prize of $50 and $25, respectively.
Competitors were asked to submit a dessert using five ingredients or less. Their entries were judged on originality, taste and ease of preparation.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny.
